West Philadelphia proudly unveils “Will Smith Way” beside his high school, celebrating the actor’s journey from local streets to global fame.

In a heartfelt nod to one of its most famous sons, part of North 59th Street in West Philadelphia—right by Overbrook High School—has been officially renamed “Will Smith Way.”

A Homecoming in the Hometown

On March 26, the city, led by Mayor Cherelle Parker, unveiled the new street name. Will Smith, standing alongside friends, fans, and a beloved former teacher, soaked it all in. “Philly, I love you. I am yours. You are mine,” he said, gripping the freshly hung sign. It was a full-circle moment in the neighborhood that shaped him.

Lessons from the Street

Smith reflected on his childhood values, instilled by his family and his Philly surroundings. “Nobody gets an easy ride,” he shared. “These streets taught me the worth of a hard day’s work.” Those early lessons, he explained, eventually became the bedrock for his breakout role in The Fresh Prince of Bel‑Air, a name inspired by a nickname coined right in those halls of Overbrook High.

From Local Streets to Global Fame

A Grammy and Oscar winner, Smith has found success across music, TV, and film. His career began with hits like Summertime and Getting’ Jiggy wit It, and skyrocketed with Men in Black, Bad Boys, and King Richard. Now, in another milestone, he’s preparing to drop his fifth studio album, Based on a True Story—his first in two decades.

A Community Celebration

Mayor Parker praised Will as a reflection of Philadelphia’s spirit: “From West Philly roots to global stardom, he reminds us how dreams take flight here.” City officials, teachers, and community members echoed that sentiment—proud that the name Will Smith Way now marks the map of their community.

Disney and Pixar’s animated feature “Inside Out 2” has achieved a remarkable milestone, crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Notably, it is the first film to do so since Warner Bros.’ “Barbie.” As of Sunday, the film’s worldwide earnings stand at an impressive $1.014 billion.

This achievement is particularly significant for Disney’s Pixar animation studio, which faced challenges during the pandemic. Prior to “Inside Out 2,” no Disney animated feature from either Pixar or Walt Disney Animation had surpassed $480 million globally since 2019. The film’s success underscores the enduring appeal of compelling and entertaining movies on the big screen.

The family audience played a crucial role in driving the film’s box office performance. During its domestic debut, more than 70% of attendees were families, emphasizing the importance of catering to this underserved demographic. Additionally, “Inside Out 2” successfully attracted teenagers (aged 13 to 17), a group that had been absent from theaters in recent years.

In summary, “Inside Out 2” not only achieved financial success but also highlighted the resilience of the movie industry and the power of captivating storytelling. Audiences worldwide continue to appreciate the magic of cinema, even in an evolving entertainment landscape.
